Cornerstones won't bite (7/2/08)

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

6 hours ago by Tyler Vogler

That time of the year is upon us again. It's that dreaded week where young adults from all over the country trek to a small plot outside Bushnell to camp out and listen to the live bands at the Cornerstone Festival.

I was minding my own business in the toothpaste aisle of everyone's favorite one-stop-shopping outlet when I suddenly found myself in a conversation with a polite elderly woman.

Media not the only culprit for baby boom (7/2/08)

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

17 hours ago by Sarah Zeeck

Another baby boom may be upon us: 17 young girls between the ages of 15 and 17 from Gloucester High School in Gloucester, Mass. are expecting babies this summer after agreeing to become pregnant and raise their children together.

And they are not completely alone - according to the Centers for Disease Control, the number of teenage girls - specifically 15 to 19-year-olds - is on the rise.

Court benefits Obama, embarrasses McCain

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

Two of the June 26 Supreme Court rulings - both decided 5-4, with the same alignment of justices - concerned the Constitution's first two amendments. One ruling benefits Barack Obama by not reviving the dormant debate about gun control. The other embarrasses John McCain by underscoring discordance between his deeds and his promises.

The power of three will set us free (7/2/08)

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

23 hours ago by Ed Komenda

Former President Bill Clinton and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama recently severed an apparent "silent treatment" that ran strong for the length of the campaign. And in perhaps even bigger news, Hillary Clinton recently stated she has merged paths with her ex-rival.

BALVANZ: It's not a loss, but a reason to quit

Iowa State Daily, Iowa State University, IA

Finally, Iowa has joined the ranks. This day could not have come soon enough for me.

Last fall, I had my first truly enjoyable pub experience. The music was fantastic, the company entertaining and the brew a treasure for the palate.

And it wasn't even my 21st birthday.

Wimpy Democrats deserve a wedgie

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

1 day ago by Jon Gold - The Daily Iowan

I am not a tough guy. (Shocking, I know.) I am more the receiver of swirlies and wedgies than the giver, or at least I was when that sort of thing was going on. I was in marching band, I did well on standardized tests; really, there was never a lot of hope that I would amount to much in the badass department.

But I feel like Muhammad Ali or Winston Churchill - see, I even make dorky badass references - compared with congressional Democrats sometimes. What a bunch of wimps.

Affirmative Action imperfect, but needed

Daily Nebraskan, University of Nebraska, NE

Last week, I was sitting on a blanket at Jazz in June enjoying the nice weather, friends and a little background music. With thousands of people milling about, it's easy to tune out the crowd. But when two people wearing "Decline to Sign" t-shirts showed up, the affirmative action debate reached my little blanket.

TRIPLETT: New puppy teaches responsibility, love

Daily Nebraskan, University of Nebraska, NE

3 days ago by Grant Triplett

The other morning I woke up to my new puppy, Penny, licking my toes, trying to wake me up to take her outside. I smirked and petted her for a second, and then leaned off the bed to put my slippers on.

Instead of my slippers, my feet landed directly into a squishy pile of her crap.

What James Dobson said

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

5 days ago by Nate Whitney - The Daily Iowan

Thank God we've got James Dobson! Seriously, I don't how we'd interpret some of the critical topics of the day without his incredible wisdom, his perfect vision. The Almighty has bestowed upon us the ultimate knowledge and singular authority that is Mr. Dobson, who has obviously been chosen as the vessel for the true meaning of God's wishes.

COMMENTARY: Show pride without gratuitous public nudity

Iowa State Daily, Iowa State University, IA

Pride. Something I am supposed to have, especially in June, it would seem. June is Gay Pride Month. Millions of people across the globe get together to celebrate their sexual orientations. This particular month was chosen because the famous riots at Stonewall Inn took place on June 29, 1969, after a police raid on the LGBT-frequented establishment.
