To assist prospective students in their college search, Drake has joined the University and College Accountability Network.
U-CAN is a free program for private colleges and universities that offers information to prospective students and their parents about the member schools.
The information on the U-CAN Web site is entered directly by each institution and is comparable to data from the U.S. Department of Education's Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and the Common Data Set according to the Drake Web site.
Tory Olson of Drake University Marketing and Communications said the site offers links to campus profiles so users can actually go to the Web sites of the colleges they are interested in and compare the schools.
"It's very user friendly," Olson said.
Olson added that unlike U.S. News and World Report's annual ranking of America's Best Colleges, U-CAN allows users to compare over 550 colleges and universities without rankings or reputation surveys.
Where U.S. News ranks more than 1,400 colleges and universities by region and categories such as acceptance rate and graduation rate, U-CAN puts all of this comparable data in one place with links for additional information about each school at no cost to users or participating institutions.
According to a Drake University press release, the U-CAN site will feature hyperlinks to campus information about topics including admissions, academics, enrollment, faculty information, internships, costs and more.
U-CAN, which was designed by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), was launched publicly on Sept. 26, 2007.
In an e-mail to U-CAN public relations contacts, David Warren, NAICU president, said in its first week, the site has already seen an astounding public response, and he expects it to build through marketing on Google, YouTube, and Facebook.
In addition, Warren reported that U-CAN is beginning a national radio media tour, with representatives appearing on local talk shows over the coming month. U-CAN can be expected to continue assisting students choose the right college - it already has over 200 schools listed with profiles coming soon.
