Drake remained winless on the road this season as the Bulldogs fell to Jacksonville 41-9, snapping a three-game winning streak. The game was close through three quarters, but the Dolphins buried Drake with a 27-point fourth quarter.
The loss drops Drake to 5-5 on the year and 3-4 in the conference. Drake is 0-4 on the road this season, dating back to last year.
"Obviously we love the student body being there and the community support - that can only help," Head Coach Chris Creighton said regarding Drake's road woes. "But it has nothing to do with being on the road. We've faced tough competition, and we let the Butler game get away, but it's not because we were wearing white or blue jerseys."
The Bulldogs got out of the gates quickly and took an early lead with a Logan Rees (B4) 32-yard field goal to cap a 13-play, 72-yard opening drive. Despite the promising start, Drake had difficulties converting drives into points all day.
Jacksonville got on the board late in the first with an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh McGregor to fellow freshman wide receiver Joshua Philpart. After Rees missed a field goal from 48 yards and had a 25-yarder blocked, the Dolphins scored again - this time a Rudell Small two-yard run - to extend their lead to 14-3.
The Bulldogs were able to answer before halftime with a 12-yard touchdown run by Steve Platek (B3) thanks to a 69-yard kickoff return that set the Bulldogs up at the Jacksonville 21-yard line. The Bulldogs failed the two-point conversion attempt and went into halftime trailing 14-9.
Unfortunately that is where the scoring would end for the Bulldogs. The third quarter left both teams scoreless, but the Drake defense could not hold up the Jacksonville attack in the fourth.
Small scored his second touchdown on the ground from 2 yards out with 12:36 remaining in the game. The Dolphins added another score just 11 seconds later when Patrick Oliver (AS1) fumbled the ensuing kick-off and it was recovered by Jacksonville's Andy Sainvil in the end zone for the score.
